Sukhraj Nahar of Nahar Group — builder, philanthropist and community leader
Sukhraj Nahar, Chairman and Managing Director of the Nahar Group, is counted among India's leading builders. The Nahar Group has built in Mumbai, Pune, Chennai and Ahmedabad and is described in this Shatabdi Gaurav profile as one of the country's respected construction companies.
Nahar left his ancestral village Bhinmal in Rajasthan's Jalore district for Mumbai at just 16, with the dream of becoming a big man. The way was not easy, but he built a team of talented people and became the head of a major construction company. One of his best-known projects is the Nahar Amrit Shakti township in Powai, Mumbai, with a club house, a hospital, an international school, an auditorium and a temple.
His social work is just as large. Through the S. B. Nahar Charitable Trust he built a hospital, libraries, schools and a drinking-water facility, and he has supported hospitals and blood banks. The profile lists free medical camps at Bhinmal in 2008 (about 2,000 patients) and 2014 (about 1,800 patients), primary schools in several villages in 1983–85, free fodder during the famine of 1981–85, grain and ration distribution in later years, support for cow shelters, and help during floods. In 2012 the trust hosted the Mahavir International global seminar at Bhinmal, with around 1,500 guests.
Nahar is Vice Chairman of JITO Apex, a director of the Jain Administrative Training Foundation (JATF), Vice President of MCHI-CREDAI, Chairman of the Sarvodaya Charitable Trust, Mulund, and Chairman of the Mulund Mahasangh. He is a founder of the Bhinmal Welfare Association and the Rajasthani Welfare Association.
He also began the Swachh Bharat cleanliness campaign in his township in its very first year, joined by public figures including MP Poonam Mahajan and actress Manisha Koirala.
His belief is that hard work brings success and that success should make a person more responsible towards society.
