He was born on 15 July 1967 into a Jain family. He earned a degree in industrial production engineering from Bangalore University in 1990, later completed an executive MBA at Harvard Business School, and moved to Chennai in 1991. In 1992, at the age of 24, he joined the business his father, Mohanlal Mutha, had started in 1972. He travelled to several countries to study the business models of successful companies, and attended management seminars in India and abroad.
The profile says he moved the family business onto a "fast track" despite difficulties, and that M.M. Group is now a well-known business group in South India. He heads its shipping and real estate divisions, and the group is entering marine and road infrastructure. He works with his brothers Hansraj Mutha and Ramesh Mutha.

Mutha is president of the JITO Administrative Training Foundation (JATF), part of Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO). He is a devout Jain who follows ahimsa, anekantavada and aparigraha, and he has organised a 55-day chhari palit sangh from his native village Mandwala to Shatrunjay in 2002 and a Navvanu yatra with a five-month chaturmas at Palitana.
His own advice to young entrepreneurs is to dream, stay fearless and work hard, but to keep ego away after success. He says one should never hesitate to ask questions, because answers open the way to success, and he believes that hard work brings resources, planning and organisation along with it.
