Rakesh Mehta trained as a chartered accountant but rose to become one of India's leading figures in the capital markets. He was born on 9 August 1964 in Jodhpur, studied B.Com at Jodhpur University and qualified as a chartered accountant. Mehta Group includes Mehta Equities, Mehta Commodities and Mehta Capital Management, working in investment banking, commodities and currency markets, depository services and investment products. At the time of the profile, the group had more than 70,000 clients and a presence at over 80 locations across India.
He has served on committees of the Bombay Stock Exchange and Central Depository Services (India) Ltd, on the Institute of Chartered Accountants' committee on capital markets and investor protection, and on the WIRC's committee on banking, investment and finance. He has also been among India's top institutional brokers for many years.
Mehta is a long-standing office-bearer of the Bharat Jain Mahamandal, the 121-year-old body of the Jain community, and has now reached its presidency after serving as general secretary from 2008 to 2011 and then as vice president. He is executive president of the International Vaish Federation, founder president of the Mumbai Pradesh Vaish Federation, past president of the Jodhpur Association in Mumbai and a founder trustee of the Jodhpur Hostel in Kandivali. In Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO) he has served as general secretary, director, executive chairman and president, and he helped set up JITO Administrative Training Foundation hostels in various cities.
He is a founder trustee of the Bhagwan Mahavir Shikshan Sansthan in Jodhpur, the Shri Kushal Education Trust and the Mumbai Vaish Seva Sansthan, and managing trustee of the Mehta Foundation. He has been managing trustee of the Shri Jain Shwetambar Khartargachh Sangh since 2009.
His belief is that hard work and courage come from within, and that business success without a bond with society has little value.
